The Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust
The Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust is a registered charity covering the Swale, Ure, Nidd, Ouse and Wharfe catchment areas with a mission to:
- Protect and conserve river environments and inspire others to contribute to this;
- Provide opportunities for people to learn about and enjoy rivers;
- Encourage partnership and collaborative working at a catchment scale.
The Trust undertakes a wide range of practical projects to improve the water quality and habitat of rivers and streams and to inspire other people to care about these environments. This includes working with farmers, landowners and communities to reduce water pollution, improve river habitat, address barriers to fish migration, and reduce the risk of damage from flooding. Volunteers have always been an essential component of the Trust, assisting with practical conservation work, monitoring and events.
The Trust evolved from a group of committed volunteers and is now overseen by a board of 11 volunteer trustees. The Trust currently employs seven members of staff as well as others on temporary work placements. The working culture of the Trust encourages a professional, committed and independent approach.
The Catchment based approach (CaBA) is a community-led approach that engages people and groups from across society to help improve our precious water environments. The Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust hosts two catchment partnerships as part of the ‘Catchment based approach’ (CaBA) initiative, which act to facilitate working and coordinate activities across the catchment – jointly known as the Dales to Vale River Network (DVRN). Working as part of the catchment partnership allows us to achieve much more for the environment than we could by working alone across a large catchment area. www.dvrn.co.uk
About the job:
This is an exciting time for the successful candidate to join the Trust and work as part of the wider DVRN, focusing mainly on the Rivers Swale, Ure, Nidd and Upper Ouse. We have just launched our catchment management plans for each of the five river catchments. These pull together a wealth of information on the catchments including who is already doing what, problems, opportunities and plans. These form the foundation of the next phase of work to make a real difference to the water quality and habitat of rivers in the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding areas downstream in the Vales of York and Mowbray. We are looking for someone who has vision to make these plans a reality, looking to bigger, more ambitious and more joined up solutions to water environmental problems at a landscape scale.
The successful candidate will be passionate about the water environment and will coordinate, facilitate and develop the plans of the partnership. The role will involve working with both internal staff and staff and volunteers from other organisations to network, connect people, look for opportunities, facilitate discussions and develop exciting projects which. The candidate will have experience of securing external funding and will both advise, assist and complete funding applications. The candidate will be comfortable talking to a range of people which will include residents, farmers, voluntary group members, government officials and other environmental practitioners.
The successful candidate will be a skilled facilitator, able to motivate and inspire but also self-motivated and able to work alone. The candidate will have the ability to engage with a range of water projects and not be entirely focused on one project type and be willing to travel across our area. The candidate will work closely with the Senior Catchment Partnership Officer for the Rivers Wharfe and Lower Ouse to ensure a joined-up approach across the two catchment partnerships.
