West Cumbria Rivers Trust

West Cumbria Rivers Trust is an environmental charity and we strive to restore and enhance the value of rivers, lakes, estuaries and the surrounding countryside throughout West Cumbria for the benefit of people and wildlife. Within this area are the rivers: Ellen, Derwent, Ehen, Calder, Esk, Irt, Mite, Annas, Waver and Wampool and their tributaries and the lakes of Derwentwater, Thirlmere, Bassenthwaite, Crummock, Buttermere, Loweswater, Ennerdale and Wastwater.


  • To restore and enhance the diversity, abundance and sustainability of native flora and flora in our rivers and lakes
  • To improve the water quality of our rivers and lakes for all through scientific knowledge where feasible
  • To engage new audiences and communities in a wide ranging education programme and informative events and activities


  • To initiate projects and work to improve the quality of rivers, lakes and the surrounding countryside
  • To successfully engage with a wide range of partners and stakeholders and work with others to identify the most appropriate organisations to lead individual projects
  • To Monitor and evaluate all of the work carried out by the trust and its partners
  • To provide educational and volunteering opportunities and facilitate interaction and communication between organisations and the community
  • To create good quality employment opportunities to deliver the trusts work
  • To work in an efficient and co-ordinated way to improve delivery
  • To promote responsible tourism
