Understanding and Managing

We need to understand what other factors may limit the number of fish in any river system – "the bottlenecks"

These will vary from river to river and from one part of the same river to another. Some may be natural and others created by man:

•Poor water quality (or quantity)
•Excessive exploitation by rods and nets
•Not enough spawning fish
•Loss of good spawning gravel due to siltation
•Insufficient good quality habitat where fish can grow
•Obstacles which make habitat inaccessible.
•Predators

A water take off point which prevents access to many kilometres of good nursery habitat for salmon, trout and sea trout.
