The Solution
We need strategies which have widespread support. Salmonid 21C believes these should be based on the best information available – rather than old wives tales or the perceived abundance of fish – or lack of it, on recent fishing trips! It is difficult to argue with strategies based on scientifically gathered data.
For this purpose, some 40 leading scientists and fishery managers have been working to produce guidelines which have general support.
A Workshop was held in October 1999 to bring together experienced scientists and fishery managers and to agree a consensus way forward on the basis of the best available science. Where consensus was not possible, the various management options were set out.
To
manage effectively, reliable information is required. Electro fishing
provides essential data about the abundance or otherwise of fish stocks
