Pools are important holding areas for parr and smolts moving downstream and for adults moving up. The deep water provides some shelter from predators, and little effort is needed to hold station, enabling the fish to rest.

Pools may also be important as refuge areas in periods of drought and as over wintering areas.

We need a balance of riffle areas, glides and pools
