The nature and productivity of different rivers and different parts of the same river vary greatly. Clearly,
we need a good flow of water which is not polluted. For spawning we need good spawning substrates - plenty of gravel and cobble and not too much fine material. Eggs need to have good oxygenation to develop and hatch properly. Fine silty material clogs the gravel and suffocates the eggs. Fry and parr like fast riffley areas, which provide a good supply of food and cover from predators. |
