QUALITY AND QUANTITY.
Environmental and Conservation organizations, particularly the Environment
Agency and Scottish Environment Protection Agency, are continually pressing
for progress.
Codes of practice for and monitoring of silage effluent and sheep dip disposal have been developed. But more work and resource is required.
European legislation is also helping. The Water Framework Directive should provide better systems of water and river catchment management, with ecological protection for all waters and improved biological monitoring.
Huge improvements in recent years have been made to rivers such as theTaff, Tees, Thames and the Tyne. Others such as the Mersey are now showing significant improvement.
