Individual salmon and trout stocks have taken ten thousand years since the last ice age to develop characteristics which enable them to survive and flourish in their own particular river, tributary or lake.

It is sometimes argued that, because of widespread stocking in the past, the "genetic integrity" of most stocks has already been significantly altered.
