CONSERVATION LIMITS

Our first priority is to ensure that there are sufficient spawning adults to produce enough eggs to replenish stocks of juvenile fish that will produce future generations. Therefore we must set conservation limits, to ensure that at least this number survive to spawn.

Only when the conservation limits are exceeded is it possible to run a fishery and still maintain satisfactory stocks.

When numbers of adults are low we have a simple choice, either we reduce exploitation by fisheries or we accept that stocks will be maintained at dangerously low levels or may even head towards extinction. This is why the measures set out below have been introduced.
