The Rivers Trust Fisheries Conference – Round up

The Rivers Trust Fisheries Conference – Round up

Last week we held our first Annual Rivers Trust Fisheries Conference at WWF’s Living Planet Centre in Woking on 20th and 21st July. Over 50 delegates from Rivers Trusts around the country and associated organisations, gathered to hear speakers deliver presentations on fisheries monitoring, delivering fisheries improvement projects, Your Fisheries, angling and fisheries science. The Conference was born out of the idea of providing a stage for fisheries personnel from local rivers trust to get together, listen to presentations and discuss areas of development in fisheries within the Rivers Trust movement.

On the first day Kathy Hughes from WWF provided a warm welcome and opened the Conference and then our CEO, Arlin Rickard, delivered an overview of the breadth of fisheries work undertaken by rivers trust around the country.

Talks from South East, Ribble, Norfolk and Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trusts and the Environment Agency were heard and well received in the first two sessions on ‘Monitoring and delivering fisheries improvements’ with lively discussions held after each session. In the evening delegates gathered at one of Woking’s fine hostelries to eat, drink, network and talk fisheries!Day two actually saw

Day two saw a last minute change of venue as the new Environment Minister, Michael Gove swept into town and we continued our Conference in the Hilton, with two more thought provoking sessions on Your Fisheries and angling and fisheries science, with talks delivered by Bristol Avon, South East and Tyne Rivers Trusts, Wye and Usk Foundation and The Rivers Trust. The final session of the Conference saw delegates take part in an interactive open discussion on the future of fisheries within the rivers trust movement.

Overall, the Conference proved to be two enjoyable and interesting days of presentations, discussions and networking and has provided The Rivers Trust with insight into some key areas in which to help further develop fisheries delivery with local rivers trusts!
